Facing the Fear of Differences FTW
Kimberly | 1st March 2010 | 10:49 AM

On our little planet known as Earth, there are multiples of races and ethnicities abound. We all look a little different and have various lifestyles, but the one bond we have is our desire to help one another in times of need. Recently the earthquake in Haiti brought out the best in many of our hearts. Now that Chile’s own destruction has happened during the weekend, maybe it is time we took another long look at ourselves and realize that being successful is not just about making money, but using our gifted talents for good in the process.

Such an opportunity plopped into my lap when I was asked if I was still willing to teach a group of teen-aged girls how to knit. I jumped at the answer and said “YES!!” without hesitation. In a week, I found a place that the girls can be surrounded without pressure at the Main Lee Art Gallery, and am now looking for donations of knitting needles, tape measures, tapestry needles, and both cotton and cotton/blend yarns to be used. If all goes well, I hope the love that I have for my passion shows through and becomes contagious. The coolest part about teaching these future ladies is that they will be making something for the folks in Haiti and now possibly Chile. In doing so they will be giving a piece of themselves in time, prayers, and hope to a world that is so opposite from theirs.

Here’s hoping that my calls for donations comes through. And if there is anybunny out there who would be willing to send us any of the needles or notions by March 11th, please let me know here, on KniTalk, or on Ravelry! =:8

Filling 3 Bags for Charity
Kimberly | 8th December 2009 | 9:16 PM

The Amazing Gina of Mosaic
Gratitude and appreciation are often overlooked and taken for granted. Gina Bonomo Dugas of the Mosaic Yarn Shop in Blacksburg, VA was determined to remind everyone how luckily blessed we are. She conceived an idea to host an event that benefited not one, nor two, but three local charities: libraries, the local food bank, and the homeless. Her idea came to fruition on December 5th during a snowstorm that kept folks further in distance away, but for the folks who did attend, the event was a hit!
The little red truck covered in snow
Here are the details of this charity event:
The $10 admission included a buffet lunch, exclusive buying at the featured vendors, chances to win door prizes, and a goody bag full of various items from all over the fibery and local businesses. Each table had a literal pile of yarn that might be mistaken for a centerpiece, but was in fact a selection for the knitters and crocheters to make hats. At each seating was a pattern varying from a newborn to an adult male. The crafter would first decide which table (I sat at the purple yarn table though the orange yarn table tempted the Hokie in me) and then sit in the chair of whatever pattern interested her/him.
Mariah's Fabulous Bags from http://www.mariahamine.com
With so many colors to select, it was difficult to choose, but since I brought in the purple yarn from the Land’s End event, I decided to make as many hats as possible with it. To make the day more fun, I taught two women how to knit. Both had learned a little, but needed more coaching. By the time all three of us were finishing up the day, I had not only enabled them, but also made two more friends. :)
The table where I sat and taught is in the front...
There are many folks in the fibery world to thank for their donations. I am listing them here because their generosity should be noted:

Huge thankful bunny hugs go out to every one of these companies for participating!! The best news of this event? We will be doing it next year and will have at least twice as many folks than the 71 crafters that signed up. How do I know? When the Pawtucket Red Sox had their first Stitch and Pitch game, the numbers were exactly the same. (I am rubbing my paws together in glee!) *beaming bunny* Until then, these 42 photos will have to do as proof! =:8

Meeting the Geeks of Providence
Kimberly | 24th September 2009 | 9:01 AM

Recently the LinkedIn and Facebook pages of the “Providence Geek Dinner for Wednesday, September 23rd” caught my eye. After attending social media events in Boston, it was high time for me to check out what was in Rhode Island. Curious, I reviewed the attendees and recognized some friendly names. Hmmm… I thought, “What the heck, why not go? Maybe I could find a connection to a job.” Not sure what to expect, I dressed comfortably in “office” attire. Knowing that first impressions last forever, I wanted to look polished, but not stiff. Taking deep breaths, I drove downtown to Trinity Brewhouse to see what awaited.
Myself with Sara Streeter
After popping into Trinity, I quickly spotted my friend Sara Streeter. This social media savvy guru and I met during Podcamp Boston last August. Of course I was pleased to discover that she is also a fellow knitter. :) If I failed to recognize anybunny else, I apologize. The downstairs area of Trinity Brewhouse is quite dark, and if folks did not approach me, I obviously was not able to converse if I could not see them.
Providence Geeks Dinner Openingsomebunnyslove paddinghttp://www.Simulia.com
The company featured in that night’s presentation was Simulia. This software company specializes in third dimensional graphics, and I was smitten with their work. All I kept asking in my head was what did I need to do to work for them. Their ties into industrial engineering kept me mesmerized, that is, until my stomach reminded me to get food into my body.
Trinity Brewhouse Bacon Cheeseburger and Russian Imperial Stout
Note, I love bacon cheeseburgers, particularly those with only lettuce, tomato, mustard and ketchup. For the cheese, cheddar is my preference, but I love smoked Gouda too. From seeing the photo above, Trinity Brewhouse has a nicely sized option. Seated at the bar, I was gobbling down that and one of their heavier beers, the Russian Imperial Stout, when I recognized the man standing on my immediate right. “Hello, Mr. Cicilline,” I greeted the Mayor of Providence, “How are you? I had no idea you were into the Providence Geek Dinners. Are you into technology?” We ended up chatting for a bit, and I shared how I was in IT and QA. I had figured that attending the evening’s event was a good way to find a job. We later closed our conversation, and I felt it was a comfortable one. Minutes later, I saw him again, but this time with another gentleman. “Kimberly, I would like to introduce to you James. James, this is Kimberly. Kimberly is looking for a job.” Thanks to the mayor, I met the recruitment team of Bridge Technical Solutions. Now, I still do not have a job, but at least that is a start.

So moral of the story? If one is given a chance to network, do so because whoever one meets there can help. If one’s stomach tells you it is time to eat, do it because look what happened to mine! =:8

Nothing is ever as devastating as when someone you love dies in your arms. It happened with me when Hayley turned unexpectedly for the worst, and the last thing I remember were my screams that begged her not to leave me. As I tearfully re-live those last few minutes with her, in my remembrance and understanding, here is my entry for Hans. Please note that not all the photos are from my kiddos. The first is a photo that Shalyn shared with me when she adopted Lady Beastie from Sweet Binks Rabbit Rescue. A lucky shot of Sven was made during one of the SBRR Education seminars that he loves to participate in with his mom, the awesome Ellen. The others are the Sweet Binks rabbits that I photographed during the Sweet Binks Rabbit Rescue socialization sessions I volunteered to do once a week.
