Earning Bubbo’s Pants

February 24th, 2008, 10:28 pm

Reminder: My Contest ends on the 17th of March — Saint Patrick’s Day in the United States. So far, only a couple of folks have attempted to name the yarny goodness from my stash in the photo. Admittedly, there are some items that have not been added yet, so please consider them a challenge. ;)

Recently in Ravelry, I requested that pants be drawn on my Ravatar (avatar in Ravelry). I had to ask the mighty all-knowing Bubbo for them. Listed below is my request, her answer, my response, and Bubbo’s reaction…

My Request
Oh Great Bubbo,
I am down at your feet on all fours, and humbly beseech thee for a pair of clown pants.

Bubbo’s Answer
I love bunnies. I want to own bunnies. I think you should post many pictures of bunnies and a picture of a bunny doing something bubbo pants related.

My Response
Okay, I did some digging for more of Jessi in her pants, and found these “clickable to make bigger” baby photos:
“Hello! I’m just a cute baby girl. My name is Jessica; I love you both!”
(My butt she loves me!!)

Bubbo’s Reaction
oh my god go get pants!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I did good. Next post? Hmmm… How about my trip to meet up with “The Boring Knitter” at Lucy Lee’s LYS, Mind’s Eye Yarns? And do not let the name fool you, The Boring Knitter is FAR from boring! =:8

I wish I could give a hug to everyone that commented on the last post! The wonderful memories of last week are what keep me going at work. Why? There never was a reason to admit that I have been depressed at my current job for quite some time. The problem is that my yearly review demonstrated how my unhappiness was apparent in my lack of initiative and poor performance. To be frank, I was expecting security to escort me out of the building after the review. However being told that your entire office has no faith in your work and refuses to work with you is quite an eye-opener. Granted I am extremely anxious because I find the department’s approach taken on Quality Assurance very condescending to the customer. But that is my humble opinion… If folks are wondering why I am not worried on co-workers reading my little blog, it is because I am seen as a knitting idiot who has nothing worth reading. Comforting thought, eh? Now on to better and MUCH more enjoyable thoughts… :)

For the beginning of some fun stuff, I discovered this contest for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Inspired by that along with:

    1. my 3rd year blog anniversary is next month
    2. I missed celebrating my 1500th comment
    3. my stash needs a fun little uplift

I decided to have a contest!
However it is not going to be easy. Here is the information:
The first person to email me (please feel free to use my Contact Me page) all the yarns with their colorway in the following photo below is going to get a fun package. It can already be assumed that coffee syrup will be in the goodies — my signature! To give folks a good chance to complete this challenge, I will take the last entry on March 17th — Saint Patrick’s Day — at 11:59PM-ET. The winner on will be announced on my anniversary — March 20th. Good luck!! =:8

Knitting for Others

September 11th, 2007, 8:44 am

Sometimes, Life pulls me toward directions that are unexpected and nowhere in my scope. My schedule is disrupted, and timelines are delayed. In the back of my mind, there was an urgency to remedy hurts in the past. These old wounds had allowed the righteous vengeful side of me to rise up and lash out without hearing explanations. I do have a bad habit of talking without thinking, and that goes for writing too. Those urgencies may be the reason why my brain has been so scattered as of late. The priorities between home, knitting, work, and the bunnies are scrambled.

A great example is the green Caron yarn that mysteriously screamed to be knitted. All other projects had to be pushed aside until I heeded its call. I even have other green yarns in my stash that would make a better fabric, but the Caron demanded to be made. Acquiesing to its wishes, I grabbed the giant one pound skein and size US8 needles. I did a quick search on Ravelry and discovered an old favorite “I want to make that someday” pattern, the Pinwheel Baby Blanket by Genia Planck. After I did the i-cord bind off and washed it, I folded it and it sat on my lap for a while. The color reminded me of my SP8 Pal, Molly. Recently on Ravelry a thread opened up about bad swaps, and the old hurts came back. After I wrote my words, I realized that I was blinded in anger from the “life got in the way and that’s that” words. A great friend read my posts and assured me that I was not ranting. Yet I know why the blanket wanted to be made. It wants to go to Molly as a peace offering. OCD has set in to find her and see if she is on Ravelry yet. If she is, I will apologize if my words hurt her, but I really was hurt too. Maybe I should write out the e-mail message I drafted and snail mail it with the blanket. Or maybe I should just let bygones be bygones and give it to charity. I think that would be a better solution.

There is another blanket in the making, Jen and Chris’ blanket. It is a log cabin style inspired by the 08-Autumn colorway and includes others yarns in ivory, brown, grey, and tan. I had knitted about a 2-foot square of this blanket and decided that I am going to frog it and then re-knit it. Why? Because instead of binding off each finished side then pickup new stitches, I kept the stitches live by putting them on a 47-inch circular. Until someone pointed out that the blanket will not be increased by much, I made the executive decision, but still have not ripped it up yet. I want to photograph it before I do so.

For more of my current project load, there are umpteen pairs of socks, 3 more baby blankets, one which happens to be a test knit. I am still trying to finish my other test knits - a pair of socks, a hat, and a child’s vest. The socks have been started, but I am not crazy about the yarn I chose. I may have to frog that one too and re-knit. The test hat has an error in it, and I am awaiting the chart corrections by the designer. As for the vest, I have to switch yarns and re-knit, but it is a fun project.

Because my FO juices needed flowing, I knitted up a couple of orange and maroon hats which will go to the “Knitting for VA Tech” KAL. These Hokie hats are based on 72-stitches in the round and were a quick fix to satisfaction. My apologies for no photos, but I will have them up soon. Daylight has not be kind to taking photos this past weekend, and if I take them during lunch on the weekdays, I find myself wanting to stay out of work! Until then, I give you a Saturday Sky from two weekends ago when Rich and I were running errands after seeing the VA Tech football team win their first game. =:8
Saturday Sky - 1st of September

Going Solo

June 16th, 2007, 11:18 pm

I have a Saturday Sky today! But I am was having issues getting it off the camera… For those wondering, the above tilting image happened when I stuck my camera-laden hand through my sunroof to take photos. Work has been hectic. While trying to see about getting ahead in the company, I was told that I needed to find out what the going rates for what a software QA engineer that did my work would be. Not sure how to go about this process as of yet. I am guessing that besides checking online, I need to contact a number of companies and get their salary lists. What puzzles me is that I have basic data center facility knowledge, IT networking, and now Cold Fusion with basic HTML. I test an application that is internet-based with ties into Javascript, Lotus Notes, and Oracle via IBM’s Websphere. When I began my current position, it was made quite obvious that I was not the desired candidate that management wanted. The only reason I was accepted was that the first person chosen for the job realized what enormous tasks would be needed and the salary was not worth the stress.

So over two years ago I began a job that physically secluded me with a team six time zones away. I was left without any solid direction, and as from my old job, I did whatever I had to do to get my projects done. Unfortunately for me, I never found out that what I was doing was wrong until afterwards. Being independent and left alone did not allow me to think and progress. My way of dress and work drive is a bit more businesslike than everyone else’s in Software. Discussing “key decisions” in the heat of an emergency is for those higher in rank to act upon the next day instead of immediately helping the customer. The fact that the friends of mine who are managers in other departments are those that my upper management excludes me to talk to does not help my situation.

Nowadays I dress down with jeans and am slowing down to everyone else’s pace. Slowing my pace has become a definite must, especially when my speedy thoroughness was never considered an effort worthy of rewarding. I have diverted all that effort into the knitting world (remember the Banner for the Today Show and my work in BKOAC?) and Ravelry, and hope we all benefit from it. If it were not for knitting, I would probably quit everything and sink into a corner of sadness. And for those wondering if anyone from work reads my little blog, the answer is no because they could care less about what me and what I do.

When not working, I am mostly on Ravelry. There is so much to talk about, I almost cannot begin out of giddiness. For those not checking Ravelry’s blog as of late, Casey and Jessica have dedicated themselves full-time. This wonderful application should be in every web-savvy knitter’s box of tools. Ravelry contains a way to track projects, stash, patterns, events, and friends. Forums exist to cover all sorts of topics. The databases use tags to help everyone seek out the perfect pattern to go with stashed yarn and vice versa. I do have one particular reason for hanging out in Ravelry. Besides uploading my own stash, I have been helping out Casey and Jessica as one of their yarn/pattern editors. I work exclusively on tidying up what yarn has been entered by all of us (myself included). I admit that becoming an editor began because seeing “Jade Saphire” and multiple “Sea Silk” entries bugged the dickens out of me (QA remember?) and I volunteered to help. Also there has been more participation in some of the forums, because I enjoy seeing what everyone else is doing and thinking in our fiber-filled world.

How about checking out some photos of cute rabbits? I thought everyone would get a kick how Jessica and Zydeco greet me when I come downstairs every morning. I get about the same enthusiasm with the Boyz, but it does not seem as cute. As of late, I discovered that picky Julius goes crazy over dried mango. Other treats he takes gingerly, but the mango? Whoa! He would not stop jumping at my feet.

Last Saturday during WWKIP Day, I celebrated at Sakonnet Purls with Erica and Eileen from the RI Stitches Meetup group. It was Eileen’s first time there, and we stressed that she needed to check out the Sale Shed with all the Debbie Bliss goodies in there. I did some stash enhancement as expected with another ball of Bristol Yarns’ King George, a ball of nubby silk, and a hank of soft buttery Manos. Afterwards Eileen and I headed out to search for a tearoom which Erica had to decline for more hardy food. We did not find one and ended up snacking at a local grill. I cannot recall the restaurant’s name, but it was good.

Tuesday night had some special bunnies at PetSmart. Lindsey, Cassidy, and the duo of Paddy and Nudges let me grace their presence. Lindsey was her funny self as last week. I am just glad she did not fight when I trimmed her nails. From what I understand in the volunteer book’s notes, her nickname is “Spaz” due to her tendency to freak out when handled. Luckily, I must have the “Lead Bunny” aura for most of these kiddos. As for Paddy and Nudges, they dislike interaction with everyone but themselves. I tried playing ball with both but all I was given were sound thumps of disapproval. I left them alone during their “out time” and they were quite happy.

Sweet silent Cassidy tore at my heartstrings quite strongly. He was one of the Flemmish Giant/Mixes that were rescued from a home’s backyard business of raising rabbits for local meat markets. He never stirred when he was in my arms, and would shove his head under my chin and nudge my neck while I held him. I had brought the papaya treats for all of the rabbits, but Cassidy looked so confused and refused to have anything to do with the bits of sweetness. Seeing his reaction to the food almost had me in tears. Putting any treats within reach of my bunch would create happy craziness. I almost brought him home that night. He is by himself without another rabbit for comfort. I really wish he was with us!

Thursday night was shared with the Ocean State Knitters and Crocheters Guild. We all brought in finger foods (from me, chicken wings and fried mashed potato bites) and items to share in a silent raffle. I was unlucky and did not win anything, but I see it as destashing my DB Cotton DK in apricot. Who is the lucky person that won this yummy goodness? Kristen is! We need to cheer because that is less yarn in my stash! ;) I also could not stop ogling Sue’s lace shawl WIP. For this project, she handpainted lavender and lime on grey silk. I am looking forward to seeing her shawl when it is finished.

There are more items to share, and all are knitterly ones. The shawl I cast on June 7th has been slowly progressing, and I received the beautiful stitchmarkers I bought as gifts for future swaps from Kristen’s Etsy Shop. Recently, my name was drawn among a few others as one of the best pals for Knitters’ Treat Exchange. I received a nice package from Ireland by the gracious hostesses. I also received a fabulous surprise in the mail today, but that will be shown in the next post! =:8

Work before Representing

March 23rd, 2007, 11:20 pm

I know that I owe a LOT of tales for the happenings this week. It seems like yesterday I was asking Guido what he thought of us going on the Today Show with a banner about knitting. It seems like this morning he contacted me about WEBS sponsoring the banner. Now it seems like the adventure of “Knitters Overtaking NYC to Represent” was just a dream during my much-needed afternoon nap today.

To start off the week, I worked from home because I had a meeting up in Boston for the Knit-out and Crochet’s Board Meeting. We discussed certain items like finding a new president (Lucy formally stepped down and is giving the tiara back), pinpointing the date (avoiding religious holidays), and getting someone to be in charge of the permits (Sue stepped down as coordinator). With my time invested more towards work and other KALs, I felt it best that accepting a bigger task of responsibility would not be fair to the BKOAC so naturally I had to decline. Patience is currently acting president; we hope she will be wearing the tiara during the Knit-out this September on the 30th. If needed, I will stand in for Erin and become the webmistress. But please do not tell the BKOAC Committee that YET. ;)

Tuesday my PetSmart socialize-the-bunnies-night was back in full swing. Because of the camera incident with Julius (for those who do not know, this bunny literally TOSSED a compact 8MP camera off the couch because he was annoyed its strap was under his feet) I had to go back to my old 4MP camera. I really have become spoiled. I found that the weight of the camera seemed heavier than before. Now after all the chaos this week, if I can locate the camera, I will have some really endearing photos.

Wednesday around 9AM-EDT, Guido called to tell me that the banner was in one word, “AWESOME” though I think “GORGEOUS” could have been it too. I was in my second conference call for the day and noting he left a voicemail, it distracted me from my team meeting. Later, hearing the excitement in his voice made the anticipation of the Today Show increase my heart rate just a bit. Questions flooded my mind like: “Will Al Roker come up to us?” “If Al comes to us, what will we say?” “Will anyone we know watch us on television?” “Will those seeing us finally realize how crazy about knitting we are?” “Will Stephanie and her team think we are Representing?” The words droned on and on in my head.

The adrenaline did some good. I was able to convince the team that a large project to be released early on account of my being out Thursday and Friday. That sprint was one of the fastest I have ever done on such a large scale. The whole time I kept thinking, “WWDD?” and “WWSP-MD?” I think both Dolores and Stephanie would be proud. For tomorrow, I will have the details of the itinerary, which surprisingly we followed quite closely. Meanwhile, be sure to check out my photos on flickr and help contribute to the Represent Pool! =:8

Representing Takes Time

March 17th, 2007, 10:49 pm

If my co-workers never thought I was a “crazy knitter” before, they definitely do now! All last week the developers whose software application I test were in town. Each day was spent reviewing new changes, revamping current processes, and running them for the better. Each night was spent for team-bonding: Monday was Boston Billiards, Tuesday was “Pizza because we are working late,” Wednesday was 7 Moons and bowling (I went home after dinner), and Thursday was a Boston Bruins game. Because my arm was in such pain on Monday morning, I was hit with occasional teasing and ribbing. For one of them, I am quick to point out that my collecting of yarn is much better than his wife’s collecting of cars. :) Some co-workers in the office find it bewildering (others think it is really cool) that I am going to NYC for Stephanie’s kick-off. My answer to everyone is “To each his own.” ;)

With all the nasty snow and sleet from yesterday, I was looking forward to today as my day to catch up the past few weeks and plan for next week. Guido and I had scheduled to chat at 10AM this morning about Thursday’s trip. I called a little after the appointed time and left a message asking for him to call me back. Sorting through the mail while waiting for his call, I found a post card from the Providence LYS “A Stitch Above” that said it was closing and all items in the store were 20-80% off from March 16th to the 30th. I immediately dropped everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) I was doing and rushed upstairs to get ready for a “must get sock yarn” visit. Natalie’s store is the only one in Rhode Island that carries Lorna’s Laces, and I wanted to grab whatever Shepherd Sock was left. My phone rang as I was sitting in the driveway. Richie called to let me know that Guido just returned my call. I scraped the iced-over snow off my little car, started driving to ASA, and phoned Guido. He totally understood what I was doing and we both agreed to talk later at 3PM. What did I end up buying? Let me just say that I am taking myself off the Stashalong KAL because these LYS yarn sales are killing me and I hit my 3rd strike!

For those interested in joining me on Thursday, I have created a time-line as a tentative itinerary. Why tentative? Because I know full well that minds can change like traffic patterns in bad weather. Fortunately this week’s forecast looks to be 40-48F that day. Now, I need to get those NASCAR Knitting numbers done before my KAL participants run me over!! =:8
Edit: The itinerary has been updated to reflect a more relaxed day. Have to make sure we do not run out of steam!

Trying to Breathe, Work and Knit

March 14th, 2007, 10:57 pm

With my eyes bigger than my stomach, I really have bitten off more than I can chew. Since I last posted, a bunch of miniature items have sprung into huge projects. My weekend was consumed by Sock Madness’ initial “time” round. I began knitting the given “Mad Cow” pattern at 7AM-ET on Saturday, stopped for a sleep break around 1:30AM Sunday, and completed the pair of socks around midnight of Monday. Because I held the needles in my right hand so tightly, I ended up pinching a nerve which affected my right arm from shoulder to the fingertips. I have not knitted since finishing the socks, and slowly has my arm come back to life. First the upper arm stopped the constant feeling of prickling pins. On Tuesday, only my right ring finger was numb. Today the end joint of that right ring finger gives the numbing sensation as if it was slammed into a door jam or had a heavy weight dropped on it. I know time is the healer, but I was able to realign my right hand in order to finish the socks. After all, “No pain; no gain!”

Because I needed more breaks than usual on Sunday, and because I realized that I did not need to worry too much about my bracket, I stole a couple of hours and ran over to Yarns at Lacewings’ Pawtucket store to take advantage of Mary’s 50%-off clearance sale. I managed to get some solid colors of Koigu, a pair of Classic Elite’s Wings hanks in Easter green, and the single ball of Cascade’s Indulgence in ebony so I can attempt to knit up Arwen. The Indulgence will be my 3rd attempt of finding a yarn I can use. Coming back from Lacewings, I figured I would fill up my tank in neighboring Massachusetts, and was able to snap a couple of neat sky photos while crossing Providence’s Washington Bridge.

Lastly, before I stop now and get to bed, I must share details of what I have been planning with Guido of “It’s a Purlman” fame. Both of us were inspired to see Stephanie’s kick-off in New York’s FIT next week, and both of us are planning to go with as many folks who want to meet us. We also are going to be holding a 6-foot by 4-foot banner on the “Today Show” that morning, and the fantastically kind folks of WEBS will be paying the banner’s cost. Please check out the invitation that I posted on Knittyboard and let me know if you want to join us. If possible, please pass the invitation along to anyone who would be interested too. Meanwhile, we are looking for someone to design the banner which needs to include the WEBS logo on the right-hand corner. Any ideas? We want to see!! =:8

Edit: Guido has a great description of what we are looking for. In fact, I am willing to offer as an incentive for the winning design two hand-dyed hanks of Great Big Sea Silk yarn by Handmaiden.

Rage and a Rockstar

February 21st, 2007, 11:55 pm

Rage is an interesting word whose translation can be defined in many ways. The most often understood definition is immense anger, when someone is filled with that powerful emotion. Another translation could mean full and strong, pertaining to a storm or headache. Rage can also mean something that is popular and trendy, like Blue Moon’s STR yarn (not to be picky, but look at their Sock Club incident). I have been experiencing some forms of rage as of late, and thought it would be good for me to explain them all.

This month I have been busy working in the office and after-hours for whatever sorts of things that can be expected during this time of year. Every task that I do is organized and charted either on a calendar blotter or in an Excel workbook (notice I did not say spreadsheet!). At times I feel de-valued and under-appreciated. The sadness becomes a raging headache.

On a bunny note, here are a couple of photos on the new kids over at Petsmart. Sir Thomas is one giant love, while Mister Cedrick is a very sweet snuggle bun. He actually starting grooming me while I held him. Oh how my heartstrings were singing! I feel them being pulled and strummed like a finely-tuned guitar. Holding little Cedrick brought out rage against the folks who gave him up.

To get in shape for Sock Madness, I thought I would see how much I could get done with my lack of time. Cookie’s BFF actually might have a “feature” or two that I have been trying to make work. Here is what I have done so far on the sock pattern.

I am going to check again to see if that is the case. Meanwhile, I am plowing on and keeping lots of detailed notes so I can duplicate the second sock without issue. I am hoping to have this pair done in time for my February SAM3! These socks are by the wonderful Cookie A, whose sock patterns have been a rage since the Pomatomus hit at Knitty.

Over and over I tell Muggles (generic term to cover those who think knitting is for “old ladies” and totally unhip) about the influence that knitting has. And over and over I am given looks of disbelief and then the awfully ugly smirks. Stephanie’s recent post describes those Muggles to a Tee. As for her book signing on Thursday the 22nd of March? Stephanie is asking for knitters to stand up and show their own civilized rage at the ignorance of the doubters. Anyone else thinking of going? Who is able to take a day (or two for recovery purposes) to demonstrate that crafters are a force to contend with wits of steel? And YES… I will definitely be there even if I have to get hotel room for the night to enjoy the festivities. Just imagine the Muggles’ surprise when they see OUR rage??!! =:8
Edit: Well I have proof-read and also realized that I put the wrong link for Stephanie’s rant. Serves me right for posting so late.

Running Back Home

November 18th, 2006, 12:48 pm

First of all, an apology for not showing you a Saturday Sky. I took a photo of the sky in my backyard trees at 7:30AM along with some FO pictures of the lace square that I knitted up with Emu’s Superwash wool (in discontinued colorway #1112) today to Comfort Jenn. However I have a slight problem with the card reader when I attach it to my PC. I get the message that something is on my USB port, but that is about it. No additional messages prompting me to open the photo directory and I cannot open the drive itself. If I can get the photos uploaded, I will date this post accordingly.

Thanks to Kim at her “Knitter in Progress” blog, I have confirmed that I REALLY need to “get on home” to Virginia. How so? I just took a fun little quiz on my speaking ability and it seems I lost my Southern accent. :( I so want my Southeastern Virginian drawl back without having to imbibe adult beverages. And yes, that is when my DH Richie knows I have had too much to drink. In case you are interested, this is how I did. =:8

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

“You have a Midland accent” is just another way of saying “you don’t have an accent.” You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

The Northeast
The Inland North
Philadelphia
The South
Boston
The West
North Central
What American accent do you have?

Update: Before I forget, please applaud Ariel from “Stariel Knits” for guessing the Forest Path Stole as my reason for locating the IK Summer 2003 issue. Ariel, please e-mail me your snail mail and if you prefer sock/fingering weight or laceweight. :)

A Jumbled Mess Turns Good

October 31st, 2006, 5:51 pm

Monday was quite a manic one. First my company was bought out; second, Rich reported that when he heard a bunny sneezing fit in the Kids’ living area, he turned around to console Jessi, but it was her bun-mate Zydeco (His Little Man, and my Angry Ewok). Yikes!

At least on Halloween night I have more tricks for you. No, I did not finish the little Clapotis, but I will after I get a Running Bunny’s birthday shawl in purple yarn underway. I do admit, the Clapotis is perfect for taking along because I have memorized the pattern. Instead of the Clapotis, I gave to Amy Singer’s CIBC Team. Besides the donation I did for the amazing Debbie at “Gotta Knit” I hope that counts towards the Pretty in Pink. If not, I am still glad I did it. Hmm… That reminds me, I need to send Eve my questionnaire on her progress bars which are on my sidebar. Well, in a nutshell, I like the plug-in A LOT. But I have to describe WHY. I almost feel like I am back at work QA-ing software! ;)

Now I present to you my big surprise. TA-DA!! I finished my Lacey Socks in Worsted Weight just in time. I realized that I should have knitted up a swatch before beginning the whole project because Schaeffer’s Helene yarn is comparable to Lorna’s Laces’ Lion & Lamb. The black yarn on the top, heel, and toe is the discontinued Berroco’s Softwist Bulky. I think I know why the yarn is not being made anymore; it splits A LOT. Besides the yarn color changes, the only tweaks I did to this pattern was using twisted stockinette on the heel flap and on the bottom of the toe. Bad news on this pair, though. I need to re-knit the first sock I did because it is 1) waaaay too big, and 2) I need to put the black ribbing on the top of the sock. Otherwise, I am happy with the results from what was originally the shot shown below last week. Now, where is that purple yarn I want to use?? =:8
